Distance Ed Tuition and Fees
Distance Education tuition rates vary based on residency. Residency for tuition purposes is decided by the North Carolina Residency Determination Service (RDS).
Tuition Rates
Summer 2024 – Distance Ed
Rates are per semester. Tuition and fees are billed by the credit hour for summer terms, including credits over 12 hours for Undergraduates and 9 hours for Graduates.

Tuition Classifications
Resident
- A person who has established legal residence (domicile) in North Carolina and maintained that legal residence for at least 12 months (365 days) immediately prior to his or her classification as a resident for in-state tuition and state financial aid eligibility purposes.
Out of NC Non-Resident
- Out of NC Non Residents are determined to be non residents of North Carolina and residing outside of North Carolina. They must also be enrolled exclusively in an approved 100% Online Academic Credit (DE) program.
Non-Resident
- A person who may be living in North Carolina, but has not established legal residence (domicile) in North Carolina, or who has not maintained that legal residence for at least 12 months immediately prior to requesting a residency classification. Non-Residents are not eligible for in-state tuition or for state financial aid.
Students only need to contact the North Carolina Residency Determination Services (RDS) office if they are seeking to be designated as a North Carolina resident for tuition purposes, otherwise their status defaults to non-resident.
Out of NC Non-Resident Qualifications include:
- Students must be admitted to and exclusively enrolled in courses that are part of a 100% online, approved DE program.
- Determination of where a student resides is initially done using location information submitted by the student and contained in the University’s student information system.
- The Out of NC Non-Resident DE tuition appeal process is designed for students who believe their automatic assessment of eligibility for this tuition rate is incorrect.
- Appeals for current semester tuition and fees must be submitted by 5 p.m. on the posted census date. The census date is posted on the official Academic Calendar and the Appeals Form.
- NOTE: This appeal form is ONLY for Distance Education students. Please do not submit an appeal if you are not a DE student at Charlotte.
